Anne Malver, MA
a retired mental health professional and educator, graduated in 1983 from the University of Oregon with a degree in Education and an endorsement in Special Education. Later her studies continued at Antioch University in Seattle, where she obtained her Masters degree in Psychology, with an emphasis on Child and Family Therapy. It was during her early 50s that she returned to university once again and delved into the specialized field of school counseling.
A committed child advocate, Anne was honored with the 2018 Humanitarian Award by The Foundation for Global Sports Development for her collaborative efforts to end the California statute of limitations for child sexual abuse crimes. She is the published author of two other books, My Yucky Feeling - Preventing Child Sexual Abuse and My Safe Place - A Mindful Journey Toward Healing.
In Roots to Wings, Anne’s poems weave together her knowledge of the human psyche with her observations of the natural world and her passion for personal growth. Orphaned at an early age, she was thrown into the full spectrum of human experience, and it was greatly through the act of writing that she processed the unimaginable. Her writing paints images seen in places where deep healing occurs - the subconscious mind. It’s inspired also by a colorful decade of work overseas where, in her 20s, she lived among sages and monks in Solo-Khumbu region of Nepal.
Embodying resilience, Anne has transcended the burdens of her early years and finds great joy in supporting others in their quest to heal.

Creating Powerful Artistic Alchemy

Anne Malver, a published poet and author, and Cari Sample Malver, an award-winning tapestry weaver, as sisters-in-law, have admired each other's artistic passions for decades, dreaming of collaborating on a creative project. Timing and inspiration finally aligned.
Perhaps most remarkable is that no poem was written to pair with a specific weaving, and no weaving was created to complement a piece of writing. Much of the magic of this co-creation is the synchronicity of their respective art forms.

Cari Sample Malver
is an award-winning weaver who began her artistic journey twenty-five years ago at Tierra Wools in northern New Mexico. She trained in the Rio Grande tradition unique to the Southwest where she makes her home. She has shown in galleries and art shows throughout the west and was honored with the Judges Choice Award for her piece “Old Soul” at the Intermountain Weavers Conference in Durango, Colorado. Cari was featured in the film “Woven Stories; Weaving Traditions of Northern New Mexico.” Her woven art has sold to private collectors and fiber art enthusiasts, and she has done many commissioned handwoven originals over the years.
Cari’s artistic visions and original designs are inspired by the beauty and diverse cultures of the Southwest. The images in this book reflect Cari’s evolution as a weaver from her first piece, “Learning to Fly,” to her more recent creations. The first time she threw the shuttle and danced upon the treadles of the walking loom, it felt like an ancestral memory intertwining ancient wisdom, sacred tradition, and intuitive design. Each thread of grace is fearlessly woven together with the complexities of human experience. The result is a tapestry of raw, organic beauty honoring the intricate dance of life.
In addition to teaching weaving to more than 150 weavers in Santa Fe, Cari is the Founder and Director of Loom Dancer Odysseys, a textile tour company, exposing others to global fiber art since 2009. She is passionate about offering support in sustaining worldwide textile communities. Through her company’s unique hands-on journeys, Cari enjoys the rare opportunity to advocate for textile artists and indigenous communities around the globe.
